What is child psychology?

Child psychology supports how your child thinks, feels, behaves and gets along with others. It can help with big emotions, worries, behaviour, friendships, learning and family life.

Our licensed psychologists understand neurodivergent children. We look at what’s behind the behaviour, build on your child’s strengths and give your family practical tools that work in daily life.

We don’t aim to change who your child is. We help them feel understood, cope better and enjoy life more.

Assessment and therapy plans are individual. They are made by qualified clinicians after careful assessment.

Who this helps

Psychology support can help if your child:

  • Has frequent meltdowns, anger or big emotions
  • Seems anxious, worried or afraid of new situations
  • Refuses school or certain everyday activities
  • Struggles with friendships or feels left out
  • Has low self-esteem or talks negatively about themselves
  • Has trouble with sleep, routines or changes
  • Is struggling with learning, reading or attention at school
  • Is autistic, has ADHD or another diagnosis and needs emotional support

These signs don’t mean something is wrong with your child. They mean it may be time to get support.

How it works

A clear, supportive path from your first question to feeling better.

  1. First conversation

Tell our team what’s happening. We’ll help you decide if psychology is the right place to start.

  2. Getting to know your child

A psychologist meets with you and your child to understand their feelings, behaviour and needs.

  3. Assessment, when needed

If useful, we carry out a psychological or learning assessment.

  4. Parent feedback

We explain what we found, answer your questions and talk through options.

  5. Individual goals

Together, we set clear goals for your child and family.

  6. Therapy

Sessions that fit your child’s age and interests, using play, talk and practical tools.

  7. Progress review

We check progress together, involve you along the way and adjust goals as needed.

  8. Additional support, when needed

If helpful, we can involve our paediatric team, other therapists or, with your consent, your child’s school.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need a referral?

If you have reports from a doctor or school, please bring them.

At what age can my child see a psychologist?

If you’re unsure, ask us.

Does my child need a diagnosis?

No. Psychology support is based on your child’s needs, with or without a diagnosis.

What happens in a therapy session?

It depends on your child’s age. Younger children often work through play, older children through talking and practical activities.

Will I be involved?

Yes. We keep you informed and share strategies you can use at home. Older children may have some time alone with the psychologist, and we’ll explain how that works.

Is what my child says kept confidential?

Yes, within professional and legal limits. If we’re worried about anyone’s safety, we will act to protect them. We’ll explain this at the first session.

Can a psychologist prescribe medication?

No. Psychologists don’t prescribe medication. If medication may help, our paediatric team can discuss it with you.

Can you assess for dyslexia or learning difficulties?

Yes. A learning assessment can help explain why your child is finding school hard and what support will help.

How much does it cost?

Fees depend on the type of assessment and therapy. Contact us for current pricing.
