What is a developmental assessment?

A developmental assessment is a detailed look at your child’s development, behaviour, learning, communication and daily skills. It is often the first step for families who have questions or concerns.

This page is the main entry point for developmental and behavioural assessment, diagnosis and ongoing medical care at CFN.

A diagnosis is a way to understand your child and guide the right support. It is not a label of limitation. It helps us focus on your child’s strengths and needs, and create a clear plan for the future.

Diagnosis and treatment decisions are individual. They are made by qualified clinicians after careful assessment.

Who this helps

Many families come to us with different questions and concerns. A developmental assessment can help if your child:

  • Not talking yet or using limited words
  • Missing milestones
  • Trouble with attention or sitting still
  • Big emotions or meltdowns
  • Social differences
  • Sudden loss of skills
  • School has raised concerns
  • Already diagnosed and needs ongoing care

These signs do not mean your child has autism, ADHD or another condition. They mean it may be time to ask for a clearer picture.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need a referral?

Many families can start by contacting the clinic directly, but some cases may need a referral or previous records. If you are unsure, you can share your concern and the team can guide you on the right first step.

What is the minimum age for assessment?

Developmental concerns can appear at different ages. Some children are assessed as toddlers, while others are assessed during preschool or school age. The right timing depends on the concern, your child’s history, and the type of assessment needed.

How long does the assessment take?

Assessment length depends on your child’s needs and the questions being asked. Some children need one main visit and a feedback session. Others may need more time, school information, therapy input or additional testing. CFN will explain the expected process before or during the first visit.

What should we bring to the first visit?

Bring any previous reports, school notes, therapy records, medical records, vaccination records if requested, and videos that show your concerns if helpful. You can also write down examples of what you notice at home, in school, during play, during meals, and during daily routines.

What happens at the first visit?

The first visit usually includes a conversation with parents or caregivers, a review of your child’s history, and observation of your child. The clinician may ask about milestones, behaviour, communication, sleep, feeding, school and family concerns. Your child is not expected to behave perfectly.

Can CFN provide reports for school?

Assessment reports may help schools understand your child’s needs and plan support. The type of report depends on the assessment completed and the clinician’s findings. Reports should be used to support the child, not to limit expectations.

How much does assessment cost?

Costs may depend on the type of assessment, number of sessions, reports needed and whether other clinicians are involved. CFN provides clear information before you proceed, so families know what is included and what may require additional fees.

Are assessments online or in person?

Some parts of care may be possible online, such as parent interviews or feedback sessions. Other parts may need to be in person, especially when direct observation, physical examination or standardised assessment is needed.

Who makes decisions about medication?

Medication decisions, when relevant, are individual and doctor-led. They depend on the child’s full history, assessment findings, current needs and family discussion. This page does not give medication advice. Any medication decision should be made with a qualified doctor.
